Pimpalapur Village, Ralegaon Taluka, Yavatmal District, Vidarbha, Maharashtra, India
The agrarian crisis in Vidarbha is no longer merely an economic issue—it has become a profound humanitarian tragedy.
For years, rising cultivation costs, mounting debt, repeated crop failures, erratic weather, inadequate institutional support, limited crop-insurance relief and unstable farm incomes have pushed thousands of farming families into unbearable distress.
It has been claimed that around 456 farmers died by suicide in Yavatmal district during the last 18 months, including 126 during the first six months of 2026. These are not merely statistics—they represent shattered families, grieving widows, orphaned children and elderly parents left without support.
Among the most heartbreaking examples is the tragedy of Mrs. Nima Dnyaneshwar Malekar of Pimpalapur village.
She first lost her two young sons. Thereafter, her husband, Mr. Dnyaneshwar Malekar, also died by suicide. Having lost three members of the same farming family, Nimabai now lives alone, carrying immense emotional trauma while facing severe financial hardship and uncertainty.
Her story is not an isolated incident. It reflects the suffering experienced by thousands of farming families across Vidarbha.
"We grow food for the nation, yet today many farming families struggle to secure even two meals a day for themselves. The cost of cultivation continues to rise while farm incomes remain uncertain. Crop failures, mounting debt, inadequate insurance support and financial insecurity have pushed countless farmers into despair.
Many have taken their own lives, leaving behind widows, elderly parents and children to struggle for survival.
Nimabai Malekar's family represents this painful humanitarian reality. Today, she does not need sympathy alone—she needs compassionate action. Even a modest contribution can help restore dignity, hope and the possibility of rebuilding her life."
She urgently requires assistance for food, medicines, daily living expenses, emotional support and long-term rehabilitation.
This is not merely an appeal for charity.
It is an appeal to protect the dignity and survival of a bereaved farm widow who has lost almost everything.

THREE MEMBERS OF ONE FARMING FAMILY COMMITTED SUICIDE: KISHORE TIWARI ACCUSES THE INDIAN STATE OF ABANDONING VIDARBHA’S FARMERS
According to family members and village accounts, two brothers, Tapvein and Nikhil, had earlier died by suicide amid crop losses, indebtedness and severe financial distress. Their father, Dnyaneshwar Bhau, subsequently also died by suicide, leaving behind his elderly wife, Nimabai, as the sole surviving member of the household.
Nimabai is physically disabled and has impaired vision in one eye. She has now been left without an earning family member, dependable income or adequate institutional protection.
The tragedy has also been reported in the regional media as involving a 62-year-old farmer whose family had suffered repeated crop failures and mounting debt.
Farmer leader and former Chairman of the Maharashtra Government’s Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavlamban Mission, Kishore Tiwari, visited Pimpalapur to meet Nimabai, console her and assure her that the family’s demand for justice would be taken before the Maharashtra Government and the Government of India.
Addressing the Indian State—the Union Government, the Maharashtra Government, public-sector banks, MSEDCL, the district administration and agricultural relief agencies—Tiwari said:
“Three citizens from one farming household are dead. An elderly, disabled and visually impaired woman has been left alone. The authorities cannot dismiss this as an unfortunate personal incident. The Indian State must answer how an entire family was allowed to collapse despite approaching public institutions for assistance.”
“The Constitution promises life with dignity, equality and protection of the vulnerable. But in rural Vidarbha, farmers are forced to struggle for electricity, irrigation, institutional credit, crop insurance, food security and fair prices. When these systems repeatedly fail, the State cannot escape responsibility by describing the resulting deaths as private tragedies.”
Tiwari said the deaths must be investigated not only as individual suicide cases but as the possible consequence of prolonged institutional neglect, denial of essential services and failure of multiple government agencies.
During Tiwari’s visit, Nimabai reportedly described the family’s decade-long struggle to secure an agricultural electricity connection for its farm well.
According to the family:
Tiwari demanded that MSEDCL publicly disclose the application history, payment records, inspection reports, waiting-list position and the names of officials responsible for processing the connection.
“If the family paid the required charges and waited for ten years while its crops failed for want of irrigation, this is not an ordinary administrative delay. It represents the denial of a basic productive asset that could have protected the family’s livelihood,” Tiwari said.
“Responsibility must be fixed. Suspension, departmental proceedings and criminal investigation should follow wherever deliberate negligence, falsification, corruption or suppression of records is established.”
Tiwari alleged that the Pimpalapur family was trapped by the cumulative failure of several public systems:
“After the first death, the administration should have treated the entire household as a high-risk family. After the second death, every department should have intervened immediately. Instead, the father also died and the mother was left alone. This demonstrates not simply negligence, but the absence of a functioning rural protection system,” Tiwari said.
Meeting Nimabai, Tiwari appealed to her not to harm herself and assured her that the village community and farmer organisations would stand beside her.
“Please do not take any extreme step. You are not alone. The entire community stands with you. We will fight for justice, rehabilitation, accountability and dignified support,” Tiwari told her.
He called upon the district administration to immediately arrange round-the-clock family support, medical treatment, psychological counselling, disability assistance, food security and protection from coercion by private creditors.
Tiwari said the tragedy cannot be treated as an isolated incident because Vidarbha has endured an agrarian emergency for more than two decades.
Between January 2001 and January 2025, 21,219 farmers reportedly died by suicide in the five districts of the Amravati revenue division—Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Washim and Yavatmal. The reported district-wise figure for Yavatmal was 6,211 deaths, the highest among the five districts.
Maharashtra recorded 2,635 farmer suicides in 2024, compared with 2,851 in 2023, according to data compiled by the State Relief and Rehabilitation Department. The Amravati division recorded the highest number in 2024, with 1,051 deaths.
Nationally, the NCRB recorded 10,546 suicides among farmers, cultivators and agricultural labourers in 2024, with Maharashtra continuing to bear a disproportionately high burden of farm-sector distress.
“The death toll is so large and so persistent that it can no longer be described as a series of unrelated personal decisions. It reflects the structural destruction of the rural economy and the continuing failure of agricultural governance,” Tiwari said.
Tiwari criticised what he described as the government’s routine practice of offering limited ex-gratia assistance after a farmer’s death while failing to prevent the conditions that produce distress.
“Compensation after death cannot substitute for electricity before sowing, credit before the crop season, irrigation during drought, insurance after crop loss and a remunerative price at harvest.”
“The State cannot collect electricity charges and then make a farmer wait for ten years. Banks cannot deny crop credit and then remain silent when families fall into the hands of private moneylenders. Insurance companies cannot collect premiums and disappear when crops fail. Officials cannot ignore warning signs and then arrive after the funeral with paperwork.”
“This is not welfare. This is administrative abandonment.”
Kishore Tiwari and the residents of Pimpalapur have demanded:
The Maharashtra Government must announce a special rehabilitation package covering:
A senior-level, time-bound inquiry must investigate:
The report should be completed within 30 days and placed in the public domain.
The State Government must identify the officers responsible for the alleged ten-year delay and initiate:
All pending agricultural power connections in suicide-affected districts of Vidarbha must be audited and cleared on a war footing.
Every applicant should receive:
Every eligible small and marginal farmer must receive adequate, timely and affordable crop credit before the sowing season.
Bank officials should be held accountable for arbitrary rejection, deliberate delay or diversion of agricultural credit.
Crop-loss assessment must be transparent, village-specific and time-bound. Insurance and government compensation should reach affected farmers without repeated applications, technical exclusions or prolonged litigation.
After any farmer suicide, the entire household must automatically be classified as vulnerable and provided:
Tiwari urged the Government of India to constitute an empowered national commission to examine farmer and agricultural-labour suicides, rural indebtedness, crop-price instability, irrigation failures, climate-related losses and institutional accountability.
Tiwari appealed to the President of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Agriculture Ministry, Maharashtra Governor and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take direct cognisance of the Pimpalapur tragedy.
“The Indian Republic must decide whether a farmer is merely a producer of cheap food or a citizen entitled to dignity, justice and protection.”
“A nation that celebrates economic growth cannot remain silent when three members of one farming family die and an elderly disabled mother is left without support.”
“Pimpalapur must become the point at which the government stops counting deaths and begins fixing responsibility.”
Concluding his statement, Tiwari said:
“The Pimpalapur tragedy is not only the story of one family. It exposes the decay of Vidarbha’s rural economy and the failure of institutions created to protect farmers.”
“Unless the governments guarantee timely credit, electricity, irrigation, crop-loss compensation, effective insurance, remunerative prices and social protection, the deaths will continue.”
“The country does not need another announcement, committee or condolence message. It needs accountability, rehabilitation and immediate action.”
Vidarbha is a predominantly rain-fed cotton and soybean-growing region of eastern Maharashtra. Farmers face recurring droughts, unseasonal rainfall, crop losses, rising cultivation costs, unstable market prices, inadequate irrigation and serious difficulty in accessing institutional credit.
Despite decades of relief packages, loan-waiver announcements and welfare schemes, the region continues to record a high concentration of farmer suicides.

Ethanol Issue & Nitin Gadkari:With LessThan 0.6% of India's Ethanol Production and 100% blame is rubish and nonsense , use of agroweste as fuel is only solution for present agrarina crisis-Kishore Tiwari
Date: 20 July 2026
Indian Trensport Minister Nitin Gadkari is being Defamed vitimised for E-20 Isssue promotiom when real trith is torally diffrent and it's dangerous trend is emerging in our public discourse. Instead of debating policies on the basis of facts, individuals and their families are increasingly being subjected to public trial through selective narratives and misinformation. Innocent Entrepreneurs in the Name of Politics When Ethanol Blenders coutries are United States, Canada, and most European Union nations, Australia Brazil (which mandates E27), Paraguay (E30),Bolivia (E25), and Zimbabwe (E20) then why thare is huge cry against the India move to save import petrol and save exchange and promote the ethenol belnding when USA is the top belnders in the world here are the E20 to E30 (High Blenders) countries use 20% or more as standard fuel, including Brazil (which mandates E27), Paraguay (E30),Bolivia (E25), and Zimbabwe (E20). The vast majority of the 60+ countries use between 5% and 10% ethanol. This includes the United States, Canada, and most European Union nations.E85 (Flex-Fuel) is being used by many regions like the US and parts of Europe also make higher mixtures (up to 85% ethanol) available at specific pumps for specialized flex-fuel vehicles,Farmer leader and agrarian policy activist Kishore Tiwari informed today.
Ethanol – Laying the foundation for the transition from 'Annadata' (food provider) to 'Urjadata' (energy provider)
Why Maize?
India produces approximately 35 million tonnes of maize annually.
Farmers receive low prices due to limited domestic demand.
Maize has high starch content, making it the most suitable crop for ethanol production.
Maize requires less water compared to sugarcane, making it a more sustainable option.
Ethanol from Maize = Empowerment for Farmers
Ethanol plants will procure produce directly from farmers, ensuring they get good prices.
Protein-rich animal and poultry feed can be produced as a by-product.
This will help double farmers' income and reduce the risk of price drops.
Kishor Tiwari who is known farm activist and worked for decade as farmers mission chairman in maharashtra who is promptimg agroweaste as fuel since 1995,has strongly criticized what he described as a coordinated campaign to malign Union Minister Nitin Gadkari by targeting his sons, Nikhil Gadkari and Sarang Gadkari, over their participation in India's ethanol sector.,According to Tiwari, the controversy has been built around perception rather than facts. He said available industry data indicates that businesses associated with Nikhil Gadkari and Sarang Gadkari together account for less than 0.6% of India's ethanol production, placing them far below the country's leading ethanol manufacturers.
"If these companies together contribute less than one percent of India's ethanol production, portraying them as dominating the sector is factually incorrect and grossly misleading," Tiwari said.
Tiwari emphasized that India's ethanol expansion is a Government of India policy, implemented to strengthen energy security, reduce crude oil imports, improve environmental sustainability, and create additional income opportunities for farmers. Hundreds of sugar mills, agro-processing units, cooperatives, and private companies have entered ethanol production under this national policy.
He argued that criticism should be based on evidence rather than assumptions.
"Every company operating in the ethanol sector must comply with the same legal, financial, taxation, environmental, and regulatory standards. If any violation exists, the law should take its course. However, no individual or family should be declared guilty merely because they are related to a public figure," Tiwari stated.
Referring to questions raised about financial performance, Tiwari said that comparisons between different financial years should account for acquisitions and consolidation of subsidiaries, where applicable, before drawing conclusions.
Tiwari further observed that Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has advocated alternative fuels, biofuels, ethanol, green hydrogen, and rural energy security for several decades. In his view, the current controversy risks diverting attention from the larger national debate on India's transition toward cleaner and more self-reliant energy sources.
He said the country should focus on objective discussion regarding India's ethanol programme, which aims to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen the rural economy, and generate employment.
"India's ethanol mission is not about one family or one company. It is about national energy security, farmer prosperity, environmental sustainability, and reducing the country's import bill," Tiwari said.
He also appealed to journalists and political parties to distinguish between legitimate scrutiny and character assassination.
"Healthy public debate is essential in a democracy. But public discourse must remain anchored in verified facts, proportionality, and fairness rather than sensational narratives," he added.
Tiwari concluded by saying that he has known Nitin Gadkari for decades and believes public discussion should remain evidence-based rather than driven by speculation or political polarization.
"The real issue before the nation is whether India will continue strengthening its biofuel revolution in the interest of farmers, consumers, and national energy security. Public debate should be guided by facts, not misinformation," Tiwari said.
