Couple's death at Saoner sparks row

NAGPUR: The death of a young couple known to be living in penury at Saoner town in Nagpur district has led to suspicion that they died of starvation. Rajesh Dhere (32) and his wife Poonam (26) were reportedly found dead in their sparse hut at Professors Colony on Monday when people were celebrating Pola (padwa).

While there are conflicting reports, with the police strongly believing that the couple committed suicide by consuming poison, there is suspicion that the couple was driven to the extreme step because of abject poverty. They were also fearful of the future of their one-and-a-half-year-old son Suraj. According to Rajesh's brother Ghanshyam, the couple always had altercations over lack of food at home and on feeding their infant child. The couple used to make a meagre living by taking up jobs involving manual labour.

Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti has moved the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, alleging that schemes like food security and below poverty line (BPL) ration card were not given to the young couple, denying them a chance of living. He has also alleged that Rajesh's father was a BPL card holder but the young couple was denied that facility.

"The family went to bed after celebrating Pola on Sunday night. When they did not wake up the next morning, Rajesh's uncle knocked at the tin door of their hut, but got no response. Later, with the help of neighbours, they broke open the door to find Rajesh and Poonam with signs of poisoning, while Suraj was asleep near by. The couple was rushed to the rural hospital, but doctors declared them brought dead," he said.

Tiwari's petition has also asked the state rights body to visit Saoner and inspect the conditions in which the deceased couple was forced to live. They had been living in a hit that was supported by a wall of his brother's house. "Like the Dhere family, there are several people living in penury and denied benefits of government schemes meant for them. The couple had applied for BPL card, but were not provided the same by government officials. The district collector and chief secretary of the state should be held responsible for these human rights violations," Tiwari has said in his petition.

Vidarbha farmers urged centre to consider Cotton Federation demand cotton MSP to Rs 6000 per quintal-VJAS

Vidarbha farmers urged centre to consider Cotton Federation demand cotton MSP to Rs 6000 per quintal-VJAS

Nagpur: Aug 30, 2011

3 million cotton farmers of agrarian crisis hit farm suicide prone vidarbha has urged Indian Govt. to respond positively to the letter of the chairman of Maharashtra State Co-operative Cotton Growers Federation NP Hirani demanding immediate hike in MSP of cotton to Rs.6000 per quintal in order to stop on going cotton farmers suicides in the region as MSP declared CACP which @ Rs.3,300 per quintal is neither in line with increase in cost of cultivation of cotton nor the set norms of MSP calculation of CACP hence urgent revision in cotton MSP is must, Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti ,activist group fighting for right of cotton farmer of vidarbha region urged to centre in press release today.

Vidarbha cotton farmers has been asking centre two demands that Maharashtra State Co-operative Cotton Growers Federation passed as resolutions that hike in MSP to Rs 6000 per quintal and lifting of ban on cotton export by bringing it under open general license (OGL) scheme. In fact earlier MPCC president Manikrao Thakare also urged centre Govt. to raise MSP of cotton to Rs.6000 per quintal but his letter has been shown dustbin that is most unfortunate as farmer suicides in region has crossed 500 mark in year 2011 too, hence urgent solution to vidarbha agrarian crisis he must ,Tiwari added.

It is fact that the cost of seeds, fertilizers and insecticide had increased manifold. Labour charges are Rs 200-300 per head and the MSP in 2007-08 to Rs 3000 per quintal, which was revised in 2010-11 to the extent of Rs 300 after a gap of four years with unjust and irrational asking more and more farm suicides due to very heavy economic losses to cotton farmers. In fact wrong policies of state regarding imposition of export restriction last year created instability in the market and the price of Rs 60,000 per candy (a unit of measure) to Rs 35,000 per candy in the global market and Indian cotton farmers were forced to offload cotton ahs half price prevailing in the international market and this the intentionally done to protect handful textile industries hence we support the demand of cotton federation brining cotton under open general license (OGL) scheme.

UPA managed Team Anna with "Match-Fixing" with BJP as Resolution on ‘Lokpal Bill’ is Eyewash

UPA managed Team Anna with "Match-Fixing" with BJP as Resolution on ‘Lokpal Bill’ is Eyewash

The large section civil society is very much confused over the so called victory celebration after parliament sent three suggestions of Team Anna that has been sent along-with descent notes from all most all parties to standing committee ,in fact standing committee has publicly asked for such suggestions and Govt. has already sent Team Anna's 'Janlokpal bill' before debate on 27th August was initiated hence matter of 'Team Anna victory' is matter of investigation as all political parties are openly admitting that once again UPA this time with Match fixing with BJP managed to defuse public anger came on the road by giving the letter from PM that has no legitimate control over the functioning of standing committee of parliament mover over it will lead to another confrontation with Parliament and UPA Govt. .

The Day before debate Team Anna announced that Annaji would call off the fast if parliament gives approval to all three demands of Annaji which has not been done as per record of the parliament and Dharna will continue till Janlokpal Bill is passed at Ramlila Maidan but three member civil society has called off agitation and asked people for victory celebration now what has been changed in Govt. lokpal bill and what has changed the in position of all political parties in their views in last 13 days that has forced three member civil society to say that draft of janlokpal bill is approved ,it's rather misleading to billions people to say that demand have been 50% achieved and 50% are left where as nothing has achieved and UPA has successfully once agin managed to see that team Anna suspend agitation but having seen larger public support than APRIL agitation of Anna Govt. has pur bigger team for 'FIXING' that include Shri Shri Ravishankarji,ex-CM Maharashtra Vilasraoji Deshmukh ,Medhatai Patkar and Bhiuji Maharaj and Sandep dixit and Salman khurshid as main negotiator which has put more responsibility on three member civil society to clarify the nation that they are not fooling the nation and 74 year Annaji over the legitimate position of so called Govt. resolution sent to standing committee taht will clear the path to accommodate the disputed provisions of janlokpal bill in lokpal bill or they are planning another agitation from 26th Jan.2012 on the same demands once again repeating tape that Govt. has betrayed them over the issue which is clear today itself that Annaji and nation has been betrayed by UPA-BJP along with three member civil society.

The Debate in both houses of parliament of three issues of ‘Janlokpal Bill’ related to citizen charter, Lokashukta in state and inclusion of lower level Babus in preview of Lokpal bill-2011 without any rule and statutory provisioning is nothing another ‘eyewash’ and betrayal with Annaji and billions of Indian who want ‘Corruption Free India’ asexpected anti graft law will not stand to public aspiration hence Anna Hazareji is urged to give alternative to existing political parties with help of other activist and anti-corruption movement leaders like swami Ramdev in 2014 election in order to give freedom to Indian masses and get rid of cancer of corruption.

The whole preceding in both houses of parliament on Statement made by Leader of House Mr.Pranab Mukherjee on Lokpal Bill as after recording views expressed by Learned Members of Loksabha, and also in Rajyasabha, it simply concluded meet/talk, saying that the views expressed by various Learned Members shall be transmitted to Standing Committee for is Perusal & making Recommendations on it & after that Committee will send it again to Loksabha for taking its call at "Appropriate Time" So How it can be termed as "Resolution" as No such Resolution was moved in either house nor it was tabled for voting. Entire Nation has seen proceedings Live on LS TV.

Its requested Speaker to simply send it to Standing Committee. Hence, its not binding on Committee at all. Its up to committee to take cognizance of asid discussions sent to it. So now, where is question of passing any Resolution by Loksabha or Rajya Sabha as claimed by both parties hence its only pure Eyewash, seems used just to get rid of Anna Hunger Strike. Core issues pertaining to PM & Judiciary under Lokpal are systematically sidelined by both parties hence this is misleading of the facts mentioned above, what's a proprietary & authenticity of P.M. Writing to Anna on this saying "Resolution Passed" ,these developments are very unfortunate and will put ‘civil society’ in fix as they are informing the people as victory of civil society over Indian parliamentary system.

The civilian unrest and massive protest of millions of common masses has given authority to Anna Hazare to change this most corrupt political system and allow country to elect new political alternative to existing rotten and corrupt political system .India is threshold of economic and social freedom and civil unrest in clear indication of revolution but Team Anna is limiting it ‘JANLOKPAL’ and ‘LOKPAL’. country wants to get rid of these corrupt leaders and executives and demand eradication economic and social corruption hence Anna should extend the demand from ‘JANLOKPAL’ to change present corrupt Govt. and people of Indian will force them to step down.

in fact rural India’s 70% population of farmers ,tribal and land labors are real victims of massive economic corruption due to wrong policies of state .the well-established policies of giving subsidies, license and free trade ,globalization ,GM food and privatization of health care, education and rural employment are basic issues of corruption which are beyond scope individual base and policy base corruption hence Anna demand even it is conceded today will same fate that was of first lokpal bill 1069 hence present momentum and public unrest is right opportunity for civil society to uproot this US-UK-USSR BASE corrupt political rulers system to allow young generation to take over the power .India needs change and Anna’s civil movement can do it other wise bloody revolution will follow hence Team Anna should expand demand and get ready for long fight as common man is behind them.

Even after 66 years of so called freedom 90% population is denied food, shelter, healthcare ,education and forced to die due to starvation ,despair and distress then there is need to change system and policies and year 2011 is set to have that change and Anna Hazare’s movement against graft is the beginning of that revolution and we urged all section to civil society to join the second freedom movement in order to save million of dying vidarbha farmers and tribal who are innocent victims of this post-independence hostile systematic political and administrative corruption .

BULL HITS

Number of bullocks in Maharashtra -2003: 79,17,772 -2007: 76,38,920 ,Fall in number: 2,86,852

Farm activist Kishor Tiwari says, "With fewer numbers available, the cost of a pair of bullock has gone up to Rs 1 lakh. The farmers also prefer cash crops like soyabean, cotton and tur over food crops like jowar and wheat. This has led to a shortage of fodder as it is no more a by product of farm. Even the farmer has to buy it today."

NAGPUR: Who can forget Munshi Premchand's short story 'Do Bailon Ki Katha' that immortalizes the incredible bond an Indian farmer has with his bullocks? The economics of Indian farming and animal husbandry, however, are ensuring that this bond might live only in such fables. As will the sense of gratitude and pride with which rural India worships its bullocks on the day of Pithori Amavasya, also known as Bail Pola in Maharashtra.

Bullocks help farmers plough the land, irrigate the fields, provide manure. Also, bailbundi continues to be a popular means of transport in rural India. Still, the number of bullocks in villages are declining and that is also threatening to put the small farmer out of business.

As the number of Brahma or Indian cows, the variety whose male offsprings are best suited for work on farms, are diminishing so are the bullocks. Regional joint commissioner, department of animal husbandry NN Sawkare agrees that the number of bullocks has fallen over the last decade. "More attention has been paid to the female of the species for the purpose of milk production and so male offspring has been ignored. The other reason is increase in mechanized farming that has reduced the use of bullocks. A farmer can hire a tractor for ploughing the field. If he possesses a pair of bullocks he has to maintain it round the year which is a financial burden."

Sunil Manasinghka, chief coordinator of Go-Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra at Deolapar, says, "The myopic view of the planners has led to this alarming situation. The cow has only been considered for its milk output. So imported breeds were given prominence over the Indian breed, which is best suited for the Indian conditions in every manner. Its dung and urine provide natural manure and pesticides. The offspring of desi cow are best suited to work in the fields because those of the Jersey cow have high mortality rate, grow impotent early and have less sweat glands, so they tire early. This makes them unsuitable for working in the fields. The Indian cow, that can meet the needs of agrarian life in Indian villages, has been ignored so much that there is an alarming fall in its number. The number of bullocks too has fallen. The fact that most farmers who committed suicide were those who did not have a pair of bullock should wake us up to their importance."

A pair of bullocks continues to be a cherished possession of small farmers because tractor cannot be used on small farms as it is not economical and also because it requires big space to manoeuvre. Purushottam Bhattad, a farmer at Paradsinga village, 60 kms from the city, feels that for small farmers a pair of bullocks is still the best option. "The cost of renting a tractor is Rs 300 per hour. It is rented for the entire day. This makes it very expensive for a small farmer as a pair of bullocks along with the person who uses them can be hired for just Rs 500 for the entire day. Besides, during monsoon when the land is very wet, the weight of the tractor can harm the top soil. A pair of oxen weighs just right and so is good to till the land."

The elimination of bullocks from rural landscape will eliminate small farmers, feels Suresh Bolenwar, who has a farm in Hiwara village. "Mechanized farming is not for small farmers. Without bullocks, the small farmer will not be able to cultivate his land. This desire to own a tractor is also ruining the medium farmers. They take loans of up to Rs 5 lakh from the banks and are then unable to repay it as the tractor remains unutilized."

At a time when the Anna-tide has swept the people across the country against the anti-corruption campaign, sadly, the agrarian crisis continues to take a heavy toll on farmers in Vidarbha.

Unable to put up with crop failure, crippling debts and not getting remunerative price for their produce, six more distressed cotton-growers have committed suicide in Vidarbha over the last 48 hours.

Reports reaching Nagpur on Thursday said six cotton growers Kaniram Jadhav of Krishna Nagar (Yavatmal district), Pramod Gawande of Lotwada, Puroshottam Pakhan of Muradevi (both in Amravati), Nitin Fale, Masa (Akola), Sheikh Anwar, Pangarkhed (Buldhana) and Santosh Raut of Malegaon (Washim), ended their lives in the last two days.

With these, the farmers' suicide toll has risen to 44 this month while the figure was 52 in July. As many as 418 farmers have committed suicide because of agrarian crisis in Vidarbha since January 2011.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Shravan Hardikar, the district collector of Yavatmal, one of the worst hit districts in the region, admitted that the rate of farmers' suicide has increased this month in the district. "We are trying our best to prevent such thing in the district," he said.

The institutional banks have disbursed around Rs 650-crore crop loan in the current kharif season as against the target of over Rs 900-crore. "Some nationalised banks are not cooperating in this regard and have been issued a stern warning. These banks have been directed to meet the target of disbursing crop loan to needy farmers," Hardikar said.

He informed that there were reports of 25 farmers' suicide this month in Yavatmal. "We are verifying facts whether these cases were related with agrarian crisis or not," he said.

Kishore Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti said that the growing trend of farmers' suicide is alarming. However, nobody is listening it in the wake of Hazare's fast for Jan Lokpal bill. This sensitive issue was overshadowed by Anna's agitation across the country.

"It is pathetic that Anna, who has been fighting for a good cause of anti-corruption, but never bothered about the vital issue of farmers' suicide in Vidarbha where an average two farmers commit suicide every day," he said. The veteran Gandhian crusader did not even speak about on wanton corruption by government officials and politicians while implementing the Prime Minister and state government relief packages of over Rs 6000-crore to bailout the distressed farmers of Vidarbha, Tiwari said.

The vicious circle of loans and exploitation by moneylenders and the powers-that-be, doesn't seem to be addressed by Anna Hazare's anti-corruption campaign. The farmers at large, though see a ray of hope in Anna, but those deeply caught in this vicious circle, are unable to cope up with farm distress any more.

"We are insisting that at least the government should treat these distressed farmers as BPL families so that they can get the food grain benefit from the government under the public distribution system to help minimise the farmers' suicide," Tiwari said. However, the government is not doing anything in this regard, he rued.

Deceased farmer's daughter to pursue journalism with a mission

Nagpur : Propelled with an urge to chronicle the lives and hardships of the Vidarbha farmers and their families, the daughter of a farmer, who committed suicide 14 years ago due to debts, wants to turn to journalism. Fourteen years ago Ramdas Ambarwar, a debt-ridden farmer in Telang Takli village in Kelapur taluka of Yavatmal district in Vidarbha region, committed suicide as he was unable to repay debts.
The only bread earner was survived by his wife Saraswati and four daughters. After his death, life became an endless struggle for the Ambarwar family. Their youngest daughter Manju was just over five at the time of incident.
But, with the support of her mother, 19-year-old Manju recently secured admission in a journalism course in Nagpur University, fighting against all odds.
“I want to pursue journalism. That way I can chronicle the lives and times of Vidarbha farmers. As daughter of a farmer, who committed suicide, I have seen it all at close quarters and suffered every moment,” Manju said.
Manju wants to sensitise people and the government about the miserable condition of farmers, who depend on the vagaries of nature and mercy of policymakers.
“After my father's death, mother had to look after the farming work and also run the family. She did not get discouraged and gave us all the strength to move ahead in life. She arranged the marriage of my two elder sisters -- Sushma and Meenakshi -- after their schooling,” she said.
“My third sister Jayashree was in XII when a serious kidney ailment struck her. Mother wanted her to pursue a professional course as she was a science student. But she could not survive. My mother was once again shattered,” said Manju.
The already distressed family got into even more financial trouble as they could hardly afford the costly medical treatment.
Against all odds, however, the youngest sibling continued with her education. After her primary education in the village, she went to nearby Umri village to study up to XII and then commuted daily to Pandharkawda to attend the college. This year she graduated in Arts.
Visibly happy after securing admission to Bachelor of Mass Communication course at the University campus, she feels she is a step closer to her ambition of becoming a journalist.
"As a kid, I was impressed by the reporters who regularly visited our home to write about farmer suicides in Yavatmal district. I made up my mind to be a journalist and write on the issue from my personal experience of pain and suffering,” said Manju.
“I remember that soon after my father's suicide the then chief minister Narayan Rane came to our village. At a function organised to hand over compensation cheque of Rs 1 lakh, several promises for the welfare of farmers were made. Among the promises that were never kept was the one of providing free education to the children of farm suicide victims,” she said.
Manju said it was with the grit and courage of her mother that they survived the hard times. She also thanked activist Kishore Tiwari and his Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti who stood by them.
She is now, however, worried about bearing the expenses of her education. “I have no idea how I will meet the cost of studying and living in a big city like Nagpur. I only hope I realise my ambition and lend a helping hand to my mother back in the village,” Manju said.
