Five more debt-ridden farmers end life-TIMES OF INDIA

Five more debt-ridden farmers end life

YAVATMAL: Five more farmers committed suicide on Friday in Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts of Vidarbha despite the state government's tall claim of allocation of funds for their uplift in the state budget। Four victims are from Yavatmal district alone and one from adjacent Chandrapur। With this the toll this year has risen to 114

The names of the deceased farmers are: Suresh Rathod of Khed village, Ganesh Deshmukh of Marsala, Devidas Pandhare of Kothuralak and Madhav Parothi of Machindra, all from Yavatmal district and Subhash Mumngal of Awarpur in Chandrapur district, informed Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), which works for the welfare of farmers in Vidarbha region.

"In December last year, Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had announced Rs 1,000 crore bailout package for Maharashtra farmers who lost crop due to untimely rains but there is no provision for the same in 2011-12 budget. Moreover, the government is silent over the crisis that makes farmers more distressed and despaired lot. It is a serious concern and will invite more debt-ridden farmers to kill themselves if immediate relief is not given," warned VJAS.

"The state budget presented by state finance minister Ajit Pawar has ignored about three million debt-trapped cotton farmers which triggered fresh farm suicide in the region," VJAS president Kishore Tiwari said.

As three million cotton farmers have lost cotton crop this year, it was expected that the state would address the ongoing agrarian crisis and will give a bailout package as the earlier relief packages were disappointing, he said

Five more debt-ridden farmers in Vidarbha end lives in a Day as Maharashtra budget denies aid: VJAS

Five more debt-ridden farmers in Vidarbha end lives in a Day as Maharashtra budget denies aid: VJAS

Nagpur | Saturday, Mar 26, 2011,

Agrarian crisis once triggered in to spiral of innocent distressed farmers suicides who are debt-ridden and dined the basic aid as five more farmers killed themselves in day on 25th march as reported today, the recent victims are four from Yavatmal district alone and one from adjacent chandrapur taking toll to 114 in year 2011 namely

1.Suresh Rathode of Khed

2.Ganesh Deshmukh of Marsala

3.Devidas Pandhare of Kothuralak and

4.Madhav Parothi of Machindra

all from Yavatmal District and

5.Subhash Mumngal of Awarpur in Chandrapur

Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), which works for the welfare of farmers, said in a release issued in Nagpur.

‘In the December last Maharashtra chief minister announced Rs.1000 crore ‘bail-out’ package to Maharashtra farmers who lost crop due to rain but there is no provision for the same in 2011-12 budget moreover Govt. salient over the deep driven crisis has made distressed farmers more hostile and added fuel in the despair which is serious concern will invite more debt-ridden farmers to kill themselves if immediate relief is not given’ VJAS warns the administration.

The state announcement in 2011-12 budget presented by Maharashtra finance minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday which has ignored about 3 million debt-trapped cotton farmers is result of fresh trigger of farm suicide in the region which has claimed more than 10,000 farm suicides since 2005 due to agrarian distress and economic crisis, VJAS president Kishore Tiwari said.

As three million cotton farmers have lost cotton crop this year, it was expected that the state would address the on going agrarian crisis and will give a bailout package as the earlier relief packages were disappointing," a release highlights the reasons .

"However, the state has failed to give much awaited food security and health security to dying cotton farmers and over 10,000 farm widows and family members of farmers who committed suicide since 2005. This is much more disturbing," Tiwari added.

The vidarbha farmers welcome the decision to give zero per cent crop loan up to Rs50,000 and two percent interest up to Rs3lakh but this facility can be availed by the farmers who are regular with banks."Hence, in order to extend this facility to debt trapped farmers facing crop failure since 2009-10 in Vidarbha, the VJAS has been demanding a bailout package for those who are not covered by state-owned banks and are forced to take loans from local money-lenders and private MFIs," he said.

The VJAS also flayed the announcement of creating irrigation facility in another two lakh hector land of the state saying that there was already a backlog of irrigation projects in Vidarbha, for which over Rs60,000 crore were required.

It's official- Vidarbha is most neglected-TIMES OF INDIA

It's official- Vidarbha is most neglected-TIMES OF INDIA

NAGPUR: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has been claiming that no discrimination was being meted out to Vidarbha. The statistics released by his own government once again prove him wrong. It is now official that Vidarbha was being neglected in almost all fields.

On most parameters, the region is behind rest of Maharashtra barring a few backward districts like Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalna. Out of five most backward districts as far as human development index (HDI) is concerned, three- Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Washim- are in Vidarbha. The infant mortality rate in all 11 districts of the region including Nagpur is above the state average. The per capita district domestic product of all districts except Nagpur is far below state average.

The ranking of the districts presents only a part of the picture. The HDI of Mumbai and Mumbai suburban districts is 1.00 while Gadchiroli languishes at the bottom with HDI of 0.21. This means that Mumbai is five times better off than Gadchiroli so far as literacy rate, mean years of schooling, infant mortality rate and per capita district domestic product are concerned.

The literacy rate in Vidarbha districts is somewhat better than that of some districts in Marathwada but all Vidarbha districts have very high infant mortality rates. The per capita income (PCI) has not been considered for calculating HDI. However, it is the real indicator of poverty. If this parameter is considered, Washim is poorest district in the state with PCI of Rs 36,087 while Gadchiroli is the third poorest at Rs 36,286. The PCI of Mumbai and Mumbai suburban districts is Rs 1,25,506 while that of Pune is Rs 1,11,637. The PCI of Nagpur district is Rs 81,225.

Division-wise Amravati is poorest with PCI of Rs 46,340 against Rs 1,09,824 of Thane division and Rs 79,788 of Pune.

Vidarbha farmer package Rs.5000 crore Scam : 50 officers suspension and notice to 355 is eyewash-VJAS

Vidarbha farmer package Rs.5000 crore Scam : 50 officers suspension and notice to 355 is eyewash-VJAS

Nagpur , March 21,2011

Vidarbha farmers who are in deep distress and despair and are committing suicide @ 8 hourly since June 2005 has flayed today Maharashtra government’s announcement terming the action against 405 employees of the agriculture department, including the immediate suspension of 50 officers, accused of siphoning off funds from the central and state aid packages for Vidarbha farmers as ‘eyewash’ because they alleged that all contracts of irrigation and purchases of farm equipments and other beneficiaries under relief schemes being implement under relief packages given by initially chief minister in December 2005 amounting Rs.1075 crore and then Indian prime minister on 1 July 2006 of Rs.3750 crore where given by concern minister and secretaries of irrigation and agriculture department .

“Ajit Dada Pawar and Babalasaheb Thorat then irrigation and Agriculture minister respectably have centralized the decision and decided the agencies under all relief packages as 80% amount of relief fund was allotted to increase irrigation facilities in west vidarbha and 20% amount was given to Agriculture department in which centralized agencies where finalized by concern minister and these two minister are the main beneficiaries of vidarbha farmer’s relief package and we demand that criminal action against Ajit Dada Pawar and Babalasaheb Thorat along with culprit babus of senior rank of Mantralaya ” Kishor Tiwari of Vidarbha Janadolan Samiti demanded in press release today.

Vidarbha farmers said that the action announced in the state legislature by Agriculture Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said that the funds were meant for the farmers in six districts affect by farmland suicides in Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra is too late to punish the corrupt babus as most of .405 officers and employees have been found prima facie guilty and served with show-cause notices including 50 Grade I and II suspended immediately and action will be taken against the remaining officials within a month, have already either got retired or relived from the jobs as there is undue delay in the taking the action on the irregularities in the Vidarbha packages came to light in 2007 and a committee headed by Gopal Reddy, director of V.P. Naik Mission for Farmers, was appointed and submitted its report in 2008, which was tabled before the legislature in march 2009 and concerned officials were served with show-cause notices in the matter in November last year.

‘If relief packages would have given any aid to dying farmer west vidarbha would not have reported more than 5000 innocent cotton farmers suicides even after the announcement of relief packages since July 2006 .this is mass genocide of farmers after corrupt ministers took decisions of siphoning off funds amounting Rs.5000 crore and all misdeeds figured in CAG and PAC reports and we have submitted the facts on affidavit to India Prime Minister but shown the dustbin .around 3 million vidarbha farmers are the grip agrarian crisis and are being forced to commit suicide due to distress but hostile administration failed to provide them food security and health security even after expert committees recommended ,this is much more disturbing hence we demand the main culprit minister should be booked and punished’Tiwari repeated the demand.

‘Maharashtra Economic Survey’ before Budget 2011-12- ‘State is all set for fiscal Collapse’

‘Maharashtra Economic Survey’ before Budget 2011-12- ‘State is all set for fiscal Collapse’

Maharashtra Economic Survey’ before Budget 2011-12- ‘State is all set for fiscal Collapse’

Nagpur- Nagpur- 13th March 2010,

Golden jubilee year of Maharashtra year 2010-11 has further deepen the economic crisis of the state and all tall claims of brining the state economy on road map of development even state is set collect 20% more revenue from tax prayers but one time progressive state is set to face fiscal collapse .there is no mega project of giving employment to youth has started moreover major job giving heavy and labor oriented industries have either closed or shifted to nearby Gujarat ,as per official estimate state has lost 10 million record skilled and unskilled jobs even when Maharashtra was claiming 10 million additional job in it’s golden jubilee year as major jolt came state mega flagship project ‘MIHAN’ in Nagpur failed to take off even after decade of the land acquisition .

In the half fiscal year Maharashtra got new Chief Minister Purthiviraj Chavan as true agent of MNCs and strong promoter neo-globalization policies and well set agenda of 10,janpath to remove obstacles in disputed projects and promotion of anti-farmer and anti-poor policies has created more distress and despair Agrarian crisis part of Maharashtra, the back door entry of MOS in PMO has strengthen the Groupism in congress widen which is working against economic interest of Maharashtra.NCP control taken by Ajit Pawar has set agenda to grab the power of it’s own has further weaken the administrative control in the state .uncontrolled corruption of NCP ministers in PDF government has given very bad signals corporate companies .infact it’s free for all environment in Maharashtra Govt. bring the state to threshold of economic collapse.

Major cash crop cotton and sugarcane suffered set back and crepe and onion growers added fuel to state agriculture economy which retarded the state GDP by 2% .Maharashtra is state where budget allotted by the central Govt. for tribal devlopement, NRHM, MGREGA, AIBP and fund allotted for social welfare ,food security and women and child development is freely diverted for the salaries of babus and staff as morethan 90% state earning is going in the staff salaries and payment of huge debt crossing Rs.2.4 lakhs crore ,this is too serious fisal condition to stop it from collapse needs mega ‘bail out package’ to survive , Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti(VJAS) president kishor Tiwari informed today regarding economic collapse of Maharashtra and urged central Govt. intervention to avoid systematic failure of fiscal structure of Maharashtra ..

I-OFFICIAL DEBT IS CROSSING THE 2 .4 LAKHS CRORE MARK

II.THIS YEAR MORE THAN 10 MILLION JOB LOST IN MAHARASHTRA.

III.DROP IN FOOD PRODUCTION BY 36%

IV.SEVERE HEALTH, EMPLOYMENT AND GROUND WATER CRISIS IN RURAL MAHARASHTRA.

V. NO MEGA PROJECT OR SEZ HAS STARTED.

VI. MARGINAL INCREASE IN POWER WHERE AS AROUND 1000MW POWER PLANTS CLOSE DOWN.

VII. 3MILLION BPL FAMILIES DELETED FROM FOOD SECURITY AND HEALTH AND SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME

VIII.-STATE FAILED TO CRATE ROAD AND HEALTH AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AS PLANED.

When in August 2009 it’s first economic survey before submitting the budget Maharashtra Govt. has admitted that state is not economic growth map when it was told that last year Maharashtra lost 2 million jobs in the year 2008-2009,food grain production dropped by 25% before drought has been declared ,outstanding debt mounting to Rs.1,58,520 crore, interest payment on debt is Rs. 12,953 crore,30% drop in employment provided under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), poverty ratio in the State is 30.7 per cent as against All-India average of 27.5 percent and more than 6000 farm suicides and lacs of tribal’s death due to malnutrition and starvation but same time rosy picture was shown regarding massive job creation and investments in infrastructure ,increase in food crop production ,reduction in the debt and restoration basic facilities to poor like food ,shelter, health ,education and rural employment ,industrial growth but nothing has happened and economical crisis further deepen and in the golden jubilee year of it’s formation Maharashtra is set to face worst economic crisis and fiscal collapse due to poor governance and massive corruption in ministry , Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti(VJAS) president kishor added.

VJAS has drawn the attention towards the wet drought situation in more than 50,000 villages that has effected sharply drop in kharif and raby crop and first food production has like to be drop below 94 lakh MT first time in history of Maharashtra . last year it was told that Total 14,957 industrial projects with an investment of Rs. 5,04,689 crore and employment potential of about 27.54 lakh have been registered with the GoI to set up units in the State till the end of December, 2010 but gloomy fact is that out of these, not single mega project as operational till today as same is not reflected in the economic growth and employment job डाटा of the state is retarding very fast। The compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) for the last five years for investments in registered and commissioned projects is more than 17 and 3 per cent respectively but in ground reality nothing has happened that cause of worry .

‘As ex -Maharashtra chief Minster Ashok Chavan was half year busy in land allotments and land lease ,New Chief Minister Purthiviraj Chavan is busy since taking oath to under stand problems of state and likely to another 3-4 years to under stand same that created more chaos in the debt ridden state ,the communication gap in his co-partners and executive and uncontrolled corruption has put state on ‘economic collapse.in order to keep ‘MR.CLEAN ’ image intact CM is not even clearing files that has retarded the decision making process and created fishy situation in Mantralaya’ Kishore Tiwari said

Kishore Tiwari of VJAS has asked today to central Govt. to review economic crisis in Maharashtra due to uncontrolled plan and unplanned expenses of state Govt. and on going fiscal deficit of state Govt. executive control is missing and corruption in administration is at it’s peak hence fiscal monitoring and central review is needed.

Massive protest On Women's Day, instead of celebration-TIMES OF INDIA

On Women's Day, a dharna instead of celebration

YAVATMAL:
Over 5,000women hailing from the adjoining Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts staged a one-day dharna in front of the district collector's office on Tuesday, International Women's Day, to stress for their demand of total ban on liquor and women's self-help groups' loan waiver.

The Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti headed by Kishore Tiwari, Chandrapur based Shramik Elgar Sanghatana headed by Adv Paromita Gosawi, Sant Tukdoji Maharaj Daru Bandi Abhiyan, Savitribai Fuley Bachat Gat Karz Mukti Andolan and other organisations jointly organised the dharna.

Addressing the rally, Goswami said, "We demand for a total ban on liquor in the district of Yavatmal, the epicentre of farmers' suicide, at par with the adjoining district of Wardha." "Minister for prohibition and social justice Shivajirao Moghe represents Kelapur assembly constituency and he should declare his own home district liquor free," she said.

"Total prohibition in the entire state is the only solution for the unabated atrocities on women, snapping of family bond, exploitation of the unorganised domestic helps," she said, adding that the innocent children are the ultimate sufferers of the liquor addiction menace.

Criticising the indifferent attitude of the state government, Tiwari claimed illicit liquor trade is an uninterrupted source of revenue for the government.

Speaking to TOI later, Goswani said even young children have been lured to liquor and it is ruining the family beyond repair.

Asked what prompted her to take up the cause of prohibition, she cited three cases. "In Bhandvi village of Rajura tehsil, a woman was hit by an axe on her head because she was involved in the anti-liquor agitation. In Bhatala village of Bhadrawati, three fingers of the victim were chopped off merely because she was participating in the liquor ban agitation. In Ghosari village of Pombhurna, a female activist was severely thrashed until she fell unconscious for demanding ban on liquor," she said.

"The cops were not even ready to register an offence against the culprits. These harrowing experiences prompted me to take up the cause of liquor ban," she added.

Asked what happened to her movement in Chandrapur, she said that the state government has set up a committee under the chairmanship of district guardian minister Sanjay Deotale on February 22 to study the pros and cons of the demand and submit a report to the government within three months. "We hope the government would concede our demand for declaring Chandrapur as a liquor free district," she said.

Ban liquor plea gains steam in Yavatmal

NAGPUR: Several non-government organisations have joined hands to demand a total ban on liquor in Yavatmal, a district known as epicenter of farmers suicide crisis in the country. The groups — Bharat Swabhiman Trust of Baba Ramdev, Gurudev Sewa Mandal founded by Tukdoji Maharaj, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti and Vidarbha Rajya Sangharsh Samiti, Shramik Elgar — have threatened to organise a massive women's protest on March 8 if the government does not respond to the demand by then. Addressing a joint press conference in Yavatmal on Thursday, the groups said that official reports bear the fact that the liquor consumption in the district had recorded a whopping 10 fold increase in the last five years — from 2.4 million litres a year to 24 million.

Addiction to liquor was identified as one of the reasons causing social problems and distress that drove farmers to suicide in Yavatmal. In fact, when Narayan Rane was revenue minister he had raised this issue in the state assembly after the then district collector Sanjay Deshmukh reported the alarming rise in liquor consumption.

"But instead of taking any corrective action, the government has allowed country liquor licence owners to shift location from one village to another if they faced any public protest. Besides there is alarming rise in illicit liquor distillation. All this has destroyed social fabric and a large number of families suffer when the bread earner becomes victim of addiction," said Dinesh Rathod and Ramesh Thakre of Bharat Swabhiman.

"State BJP president Sudhir Mungantiwar has supported the prohibition demand and written to Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan. So have Yavatmal MLA Nilesh Parvekar, deputy speaker Vasant Purke, who hails from that district. If the government does not accept our demand, on international Women's Day (March 8), we will take out a massive march to the district collectorate to register our protest," said Kishore Tiwari of VJAS.

"We do not need any committee to destudy the grave implications of excessive drinking in the district, prohibition should be imposed before more damage is caused," said Paromita Goswami of Shramik Elgar.
