The News of Export Cotton Ban leads Price crash forcing Vidarbha Tribal Farmer to commit suicide

Nagpur -18TH APRIL 2011

Indian Govt. to put further quantitative restriction on cotton export so that domestic textile mill owner get very cheap raw cotton has crashed cotton rates in vidarbha from Rs.6200 to Rs.4200 per quintal in week has forced tribal farmer Punaji Dhurve (22) of village zuli in yavtmal to commit suicide taking toll of farm suicide to 142 in this year 2011, Kishor Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti(VJAS )informed in press release today

‘last week only Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had announced that bumper crop of cotton to the tune of record 375 lakhs bales dually supported by USAD reports that India has recorded mega yield of cotton due American Bt.cotton seed and very costly pesticides has created ray of hope that now Govt. will lift quota restriction on cotton export but closely associated sources in central Govt. has spread news that the cotton export ban will continue has reflected very badly in market and prices slashed by 40% vidarbha from Rs.6200 to Rs.4200 per quintal in week has added fuel in agrarian crisis of west vidarbha which has reported more than 10,000 cotton farmers since June 2005 ’ Kishore Tiwari added.

‘In fact the data of bumper crop given by Indian Council Agri. Research(ICAR-CICR) that the yield of 375 lakh bales is misleading but in reality the cotton crop is lowest in the India and cotton growers of vidarbha are in deep trouble as excessive and record rain and massive floods in cotton cultivating areas which has damaged most of standing Bt.cotton crop and excessive rain has jumped the cultivation cost to double, but expected yield has been reduce to 50% that has disturbed the cotton economy at large ’Kishor Tiwari of VJAS added.

VJAS urged Indian Prime Dr.Manmoham Singh to lift ban on cotton export so that cotton farmers in dying vidarbha region can get the prevailing market as protecting Indian textile mills at cost of cotton farmers genocide is matter of freezing the right to live innocent farmers ’Tiwari added.
