Task Force welcomes Mah. Govt.'s decision to fine Bt cotton seeds companies   Rs 1,050 crore  ( around 15 million USD) firms for Pink Boll-worm losses : Demands complete ban of Bt.cotton seed in India

Date- 2 October 2018

Farm Task Force(Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission(VNSSM) chairman kishor tiwari today welcome Mah. Govt.'s historic decision of issuing notices to fine nearly 60 Indian Bt.cotton seed companies using genetically modified  Bt. technology being made available by American seed giant Monsanto now being owned by Bayer Ltd ,another world no one Agro inputs which are  Seed and chemicals manufactures under the legal provision  of Maharashtra Cotton Seeds (Regulation of sale, supply, distribution and fixation of sale price) Act,2009 after 14 lakh farmers filed  complaint about very quality of seed or seed's failure to resist pink boll-worm attack.

This is first in the history of the world when in mass 14 lakh cotton farmers challenge the quality and failure of technology to withstand it's claim to protect the crop from all pest attack including PBW (Pink boll-worm ) attack ,in fact the amount of compensation is likely to go up to Rs 1,200 crore as till date hearing in nearly 10 lakh cases have been completed . In Maharashtra alone cotton crop in being cultivated in more than 42 lakh  hector by more than 5 million cotton farmers and it's only cash crop in state , Tiwari added.
"We demand  complete ban of  sale of Bt.cotton seed of these 60 cotton seed companies till issue of claim to protect the crop from all pest attack including PBW (Pink boll-worm ) and amount of compensation is resolved ,Tiwari urged the Govt.

As this is the highest ever payout sought by the government from the companies as last year, farmers across Maharashtra reported huge cotton crop losses to the tune of Rs. 6000 crore due to large scale pink boll worm attack resulting large scale farmers   suicides  forcing Maharashtra  government to declare  three ways to provide compensation to the farmers v.i.z.  through crop insurance, by seeking compensation under the national disaster relief fund and under provision  Maharashtra Cotton Seeds Act,2009  from cotton seed companies ,Tiwari said.

At present in India as nearly 98% of the cotton crop cultivated in  by using Bt seeds  which is monopoly of these cotton seed companies in it's multi billion trade and cotton crop failure crisis is closely linked to develop pressure to get clearance to most disputed variety of herbicide tolerant  Bt cotton  seeds, that has some part to play in the crisis but asking the cotton seed companies  to pay compensation to tune of Rs.1200 crore will have larger impact on Indian Govt. in near future asking officials to close these cases in the appeals itself , Tiwari feared .
